With today’s more modern fabrics, you can create a designer look with the added benefit of customizing your orders. Imagine choosing unique colors, patterns and textures from some of the biggest designers in fabrics. Mix and match floral patterns with checks, plaids with plains and alternating trims and tassels. Pair something soft like a fabric valance with a harder material like a wooden blind and you’ll be able to marry the two looks seamlessly.

Shades

Try looking online or scour your favorite design magazines for some inspirational looks. Another idea is to make a mental note while watching some of your weekly television shows, perhaps you can take a cue if you are a big Downton Abbey fan, and hearken back to some of that timeless design of that post-WW1 era by creating your own British Estate look. Inspiration can come in the most unexpected of places. Keep your eyes peeled. Take a picture with your smart phone when eating out or visiting friends and ask the homeowner or proprietor of the restaurant where they acquired their window treatments. Chances are they will be flattered that you too, recognize their design efforts and its timeless elegance.

Shutters

With today’s various looks and designs, there are a wide range of styles and materials to choose from. Whether you are drawn to the cleaner, more modern look with metal constructed, creating that linear form and function or to the timeless elegance crafted in a traditional wooden slate, these can be custom made to fit in any size or shaped window. In addition to their aesthetically pleasing look, their more important role of providing privacy and security can be easily established, either by hand or with our technological advancements, by remote control.  These might be impossible to reach by hand (think skylights) but can now be opened or closed by simply pressing a button.

Drapery

Before making your investment, try stopping by a fabric or upholstery store to physically touch the fabric. In addition to their visual appearances, drapery can also be tactile and textural in design. If you discover that silk feels too slippery in your hands, than consider the more matted sensation found in linen or cotton materials. You can still achieve the same look, but perhaps with a more toned down version. Drapery can also include little accouterments like braided tassels, woven trim and cordage. These finishing touches can also give your window treatments that little added boost of whimsy and a signature appeal.
